"The whole sporting genre opened up to me when a member of the MCC commissioned me to paint a cricket match. On my first day I knew that this scene encapsulated all the elements that I cherished: figures interacting within a beautiful setting under the natural light of a Summer's day. Perfect. I see sporting events, both professional and amateur, as a huge part of British life, but they also appeal to me because of their quintessential elegance. No matter what your stance on sport in general, it's impossible to deny the sheer beauty or charm of a racehorse powering down the home straight, a village cricket match, or a winning kick in the Rugby World cup."
