Portraiture - “Closer”
“I generally approach my portraits by making an exhaustive series of sketches which I then work up into studies. This gives me time to think about the technical aspects of the painting, as well as how best to recreate the mood of the moment. Anyone who is familiar with my output will know that my style is impressionistic, but when it comes to portraits who can ignore the influence of great British artists like Gainsborough or Reynolds? These individuals presented and interpreted every detail to recreate an accurate and speaking rendition of their subject. This close attention to every nuance of tone, expression and setting introduces a certain intimacy between the subject and the viewer which is what I believe to be at the heart of a successful piece of portraiture.”
